The Marsh
After the last house: old walls and high hedges rich with ferns, Red Campion, Cow Parsley. Herb Robert, Meadowsweet, Violas. Then the cattle grid and everything is simplified to a narrow road curling between fields and marsh. Bleating of lambs, ditches, still pools, cattle grazing; the last of the sunlight on reeds, and in the filmy distance unseen: sands, estuary, lighthouse. The stillness, silence, and more silence of night rising from the sombre earth. First published in Acumen Published in collection: Telling The Time |
